Two six-storey student housing buildings, clad in black metal panels, sit alongside each other at the southern end of Toronto's York University campus. Behind them are parking lots and beside them is a scraggly field, waiting to become something better. The most striking thing about these new housing blocks-named The Quad-are the delicate line drawings etched into their almost pure black metal exteriors.

Guela Solow-Ruda, principal of the architecture firm ARK, spoke about the idea of a 'city' being a 'home' and buildings that evoke a sense of permanence and homecoming. As an example, she showed the crowd some images of one of her company's recent commissions, The Quad, a new student residence at York University with a striking black facade. "The building is envisioned as a permanent black marker," she said. "Like a rock: black and immovable, part of the Earth's crust, as if it had been there for 1,000 years and will remain for another 1,000 years."

The time demands are a huge factor, too, particularly since women still have primary responsibility on the home front. If one of her children is sick, for instance, Guela Solow-Ruda, an associate partner at Petroff Partnership Architects in Markham, Ont., takes time off for the doctor's visit, something she doesn't see the guys at the office doing. When her first child was born in 1996, she was the first woman at her firm - which has been in business since the 1950s, to take maternity leave.
