Designed as a result of an extensive consultative process, the master plan was developed over a six month period, involving over 30 stakeholder groups. Located in the centre of the Baycrest Campus, this 472-unit residence offers long-term care to an aging population. Representing state-of-the-art thinking in design for the elderly, this building reflects an extensive knowledge of the daily operation of Seniors' Residences. The development of 'Living Units' centered around outdoor courtyards creates a residential atmosphere in which the resident can enjoy the amenities of home coupled with the conveniences of a shared facility. Programmatic relationships establish both intimacy as well as the efficiencies of large scale developments. Home units contain 12 residential suites, dining and living rooms. Common facilities include a lobby, meeting areas, dining rooms, library, art galleries, crafts, games, music, exercise rooms, worship areas and greenhouses. Construction of this award-winning seven-storey residential facility was completed within 0.5% of the construction budget in the Spring of 2000.
